At Pelago, we want you to be a strong programming generalist able to move across each layer of our application, gaining knowledge of our overall architecture. Idea sharing is a key aspect of our culture. We expect you to collaborate with other developers, Program Managers and QA to ensure a world class product. You will move between designing and implementing new features, improving the architecture and algorithms of existing code, and debugging and bug fixing in our agile development process. Our approach provides you with lots of opportunities to learn and contribute, and we expect you to hit the ground running and to contribute immediately to our effort.

Pelago's flagship product is Whrrl, a new application for discovering places and events you’re likely to be interested in, based on where you and your friends actually go. We’re shipping Whrrl on mobile (J2ME), SMS, and web (AJAX) clients, and are currently developing for BREW and iPhone. The server side is a Linux stack leveraging Tomcat, MySQL, memcached, and Solr. We’re also developing a mapping application, geospatial faceted search, application analytics, and creating an authoritative directory of all social gathering places in the world.

The entry point for this job is core development chops, a bias towards action, and ambition to do more than just your job description. Of course, we expect the business basics: promptness, attention to detail, solid written communication, respect for co-workers, and ability to focus on the task at hand.

Preferred qualifications include:

• 2-20+ years of experience building production software
• A solid grounding in Computer Science fundamentals (based on a BS or MS in CS or related field)
• Deftness at object-oriented design and systems architecture
• Mastery of the tools of the trade, including a variety of modern programming languages (Java, JavaScript, C/C++, Objective C) and open-source technologies (Spring, Hibernate) and Platforms (J2ME, BREW, Windows Mobile, Nokia Series 60, IE, Safari, FireFox)
• Excellence in technical communications with peers and non-technical co-workers
