The Future of IT for Companies, Consumers, and Employees

We are currently in a landmark shift in the way in which companies provide information to themselves, each other, and their customers. Key changes are taking place regarding mobility, the consumerization of technology, evolving architectures, and cloud-based initiatives. These shifts will significantly impact how businesses spend money for technology as well as the types of careers and professions that prosper in the near-future market. These changes also provide for a profoundly different customer experience that is currently driving a completely new set of consumer expectations.

The Gamification Wave

Gamification has quickly evolved beyond its roots in Four Square and similar services. It has become a way for us to engage employees, customers and friends. From a systems perspective we have evolved from collaboration to social media to gamified web and mobile experiences. From a communications perspective we have risen from talking to people, to dialoging, to deeper interaction. What we have learned from games is now being applied to how we build systems, manage people and market products and services. The term ‘Gamification’ may just be a trend, but the underlying ideas will change how we build systems and interact with customers.

IEEE Seattle Computer Society joint talk – Scaling Out Semantic Web – To Hadoop and Beyond!

Date and time

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

7pm

Topic

Companies are finding that their traditional data management tools are not able keep up with their data collection rate. Once graphs are scaled above a certain size the big queries may need to be done in MapReduce.

Hadoop has led the way in commoditizing Big Data infrastructure, but the field is in its infancy. Covered in this talk will be lessons learned from Hadoop, common issues and limitations of the platform, and potential new solutions that are appearing on the horizon with focus on efficient, large scale, batch processing (e.g. Hadoop) and domain specific modeling.  Scaling out OWL to beyond what could be ordinarily / cheaply achieved using in memory based solutions will be discussed.  Another area reviewed will be in extracting semantic data from large amounts of semi-structured data using Machine Learning and batch processing.

Speaker

Matthew Moloney is a graduate of The Australian National University. Matt’s most recent experience was with eBay as an Applied Researcher for Experimental Platforms and Machine Learning, following up a Program manager position at Microsoft.

Details

If you would like to attend please register online.  Additional details and location are available on the web site.  We would like to thank WrightRobbins, Inc. for the venue and hosting the talk.

Applying Principles of Agile Development to Manufacture a Revolutionary Car

Date and time
Wednesday, March 16, 2011

6:00 pm – 7:00 pm (Networking and Pizza)
7:00 pm – 8:00 pm (Presentation with question and answer period)
7:00 pm – 8:00 pm (Webcast, recording to be made available)

Update: The presentation is now available.

Overview
Team WIKISPEED entered a $10 Million competition to produce road legal 100+ mpg cars. They built the impossible in three months. Joe Justice will talk about Agile practices applied to enormously speed up physical manufacturing. Joe leads WIKISPEED, a team of 71 volunteers in 6 countries, and walks through how their 100 MPG road car was made possible through modular design, iterative development, and Agile project management. Joe takes a deep dive on exactly how Agile from software projects is applied to physical engineering and manufacture. Joe will use the example and of the design and development of their revolutionary 100 mpg, gasoline powered, four-seat car with a target price of $17,995.

This ground breaking work expands the agile process to design and manufacturing of the car. The talk will provide tools and take-aways for engineers and executives, in manufacturing and software, looking to improve their processes. New professionals and students can see examples of the value found in pairing, prioritized backlog driven development, and extreme programming, as they see the methodology jump from software teams to research, manufacturing, and product engineering.

For those who have participated in WIKISPEED talks before, this session will be the deepest dive into process applied.
